Relationships

Relationships are an extremely important part of our lives and whether or not we experience satisfaction. Whether it is with partners, friends or families - our relationships have an impact on our sense of self and how we navigate our world through connection with others. They can be a source of affection, security, hope and excitement and fill our lives with joy and meaning or they can make us feel alone, depressed, grieving, anxious and devastated. They can also be the place where our deepest vulnerabilities, toxic behaviors and unsolved past hurts come up and reveal what hasn’t been healed.

Distress involving a relationship is the most common issue that causes people to seek therapy because it is so important to our mental health. Some of the issues people seek help for are

Break-ups, trust, infidelity, intimacy, sexual problems, family issues, communication and parenting.

Relational problems are real and often people blame themselves or the other person and things stay stuck or unhealed. New relationships are formed and sometimes the same issue keeps showing up in different ways. There is a complexity to our relationships (it’s complicated) and I am here to help you unravel the complexity and move forward by helping you improve your relationship with yourself and others.

Anxiety

Anxiety is a normal reaction to danger and is part of our body’s fight-or-flight response that is triggered when we feel threatened, face a challenging situation or are under pressure. It isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but when the worry and fear interfere with your daily life it starts to be a disordered response. Anxiety disorders are a group of related disorders rather than just a single disorder. Your response and reaction to anxiety is individual. While one person may have anxiety attacks that strike with no warning, another person may experience extreme social anxiety and isolate. Yey, another person may live in a state of constant tension and worry about everything. In all anxiety’s different forms, it can cause an intense and debilitating strain in your life if it gets out of proportion.

If anxiety is preventing you from living the life you want then it’s important to get help. Untreated anxiety conditions can become worse. Anxiety disorders are highly treatable. I use a two-factor approach in treatment.. First, I help you with interventions that will provide some immediate relief. This is when many people leave therapy because they feel better (or their insurance runs out of coverage). But, as the saying goes, “The time to fix the roof is when it isn’t raining.” As you start to feel better and stronger, we can explore the root causes and core elements that are the driving force behind your anxiety so that you can get protection from it tearing you down again. I am here to help you heal long-term, not just put a band-air on anxiety and make the process as comfortable as possible.

Trauma Recovery

Emotional and psychological trauma is debilitating to your sense of security, can make you feel helpless and increases your sense of danger. It is an overwhelm to your central nervous system. Psychological trauma causes intense anxiety, upsetting emotions, triggers memories, and it can also leave you feeling numb and/or unable to trust. It also can cause feelings of disconnectedness to yourself and others.

Traumatic experiences often involve a threat to life, but any situation that leaves you feeling unsafe, overwhelmed and isolated can result in trauma, even if it doesn’t involve physical harm. It’s not the objective circumstances that determine whether an event is traumatic, but your subjective emotional experience to the event.

Trauma can be caused by one time events or situations that happen over a longer period of time. Abuse, accidents, bullying, neglect, injuries or experiencing violence are some causes of trauma. Especially if it was unexpected or happened in childhood. Often overlooked, it is important to understand that you do not need to be directly involved in an event to experience vicarious trauma and for it to affect you.

Whatever the cause of your trauma, whether it happened years ago or yesterday, you can make healing changes recover. The important thing is to not isolate and get the help you need.

I have extensive experience in helping my clients with trauma. I tailor my approach with sensitivity for what works best for you as an individual as well as the events you have experienced using research-backed modalities that have proven to be effective.

Performance & Wellness

Performance and wellness are dynamic states of our mental, physical and social well-being. Areas that impact our performance and wellness are lifestyle, environmental and biological.

The old, out-dated model of care treated psychological health as something that should not be addressed until something is deeply broken and did not focus on performance, preventative care or wellness. Luckily, this is a thing of the past and we now realize that a therapist or coach can help greatly in helping to identify areas where we may be stuck, have blindspots or want to improve our functioning to perform, reach new heights and feel our best self.

In this area, I employ performance psychology to help you in areas such as sports, business, creative pursuits as well as general healthy lifestyle. If you want to explore lifestyle enrichment, be at the top of your game and develop new skills and strategies to achieve your goals, then don’t hesitate to contact me.

Personality & Identity

Personality is the way we live in our identity and together, they are what makes a whole person. Personality and identity differ in what parts we hold deep inside ourselves and what we present to the world. When personality and identity do not match, then a person isn’t functioning as a fully integrated self and complications can arise. Personality disorders are long-lasting and disruptive to functioning and affect our thinking, behavior and mood. They make it extremely difficult to relate to others.

These are some signs that you may be have issues with personality and/or identity:

  • You question whether you love yourself or truly know yourself

  • You feel disconnected from yourself

  • Your have trouble forming deep relationships

  • Your relationships change quickly and go from good to bad

  • Feelings of emptiness

  • Contradictory thoughts, behaviors and beliefs and/or changing values

  • You lack stability in your life and/or act impulsively

While it can take a lot of courage for a person to address these concerns, it can also be extremely valuable to do so because it leads to greater feelings of security, stability, more satisfying relationships, confidence and ease in navigating the world. Being able to love yourself and have a strong sense of self while being able to connect deeply with others is a wonderful experience and I will be a guide with you through the journey to create lasting change.
